THE QUICK ANSWER
What to settle first.
Ask the business that repaired the leak to identify the failed component, repair date and work performed. Keep that proof with the utility inquiry, and keep the indoor restoration scope in a separate file. SPU may require repair evidence for a leak adjustment; a drying invoice by itself does not describe a repaired pipe, and neither document guarantees a billing adjustment.

Three points to clarify.

Choose the right repair proof for a utility-billing inquiry without conflating it with indoor restoration.

01 / PLAN THE CONVERSATION
Identify what was repaired, rather than sending every invoice
Seattle Public Utilities says a non-underground leak-adjustment request needs evidence of repair, such as an invoice, photos or an explanation. Its page also sets a repair deadline and separate inspection requirements for an underground line. Check the current requirements with SPU for your account before relying on a document or covering an underground repair. This is a utility inquiry, not a promise of eligibility.
Ask for a repair record naming the component and date. A kitchen supply connection, an appliance defect and a pipe outside the building are different descriptions. If the repair invoice only says “service call,” request clarification from its issuer; do not rewrite the invoice or guess the source.
02 / PLAN THE CONVERSATION
Give the indoor assessor a different question
For pipe and supply-line water damage, the restoration question is which indoor materials need assessment, removal or drying after the source is controlled. Ask the responding business to distinguish that work from plumbing repair. A receipt for replacing a valve does not establish the condition beneath the cabinet.
Consider a hypothetical kitchen leak. The plumber documents a repaired connection on Monday; an assessor checks the cabinet base Tuesday. Put both dates on the event record, but send the utility the repair evidence it requests and give the assessor the material observations. Do not infer how long concealed wood was wet from the billing interval.

Keep an unresolved adjustment out of the work authorization
Before arranging cleanup, ask who approves its scope and pays its charges if the utility adjustment is refused or delayed. The bill inquiry does not authorize a restoration business to expand work. Preserve the original documents and add dated explanations when new findings arrive.
Describe only safely observed damage; stay away from wet electrical equipment and suspect contaminated water. Ask the answering provider to identify itself and confirm availability, assessment charges and the written scope at your address. This site is an independent referral publisher. It does not repair plumbing, decide SPU billing or promise insurer reimbursement.
YOUR DECISION WORKSHEET
Match the document to its decision
| Document | Useful for | Still unanswered |
|---|---|---|
| Component repair invoice | What was fixed and when | Condition of concealed indoor materials |
| Restoration assessment | Affected materials and proposed cleanup | Utility adjustment eligibility |
| Utility response | Account-specific billing decision | Authority to expand restoration work |

Build a short outline from what you know. This does not submit a request or book service.
Your call notes
Questions to ask: Identify the water utility on the actual account. Request component and repair-date details from the repair business. Keep indoor assessment findings separate. Please confirm whether you handle the water removal and drying needs I describe and serve my address, plus any assessment fees and exclusions.
Common questions
Does an extraction invoice prove the leak was repaired?
It may document removal of water, but ask the source-repair business for evidence of the repair itself.
Should I wait for a bill adjustment before arranging an assessment?
An unresolved bill inquiry should not replace attention to damage or hazards. Ask about assessment charges and authorization separately.
