THE QUICK ANSWER
What to settle first.
A City Light restoration estimate or a lit room does not certify that wet electrical equipment is safe or that a drying plan is complete. Record when you noticed equipment stop, notify the provider, and obtain its restart and reassessment instructions. Keep utility restoration, electrical safety and the indoor moisture assessment as separate decisions.
AT A GLANCE
Three points to clarify.
Decision
Separate a utility power observation from safe equipment restart and a revised drying assessment.
Keep separate

Prepare the call
Describe observed damage and ask who approves the restoration scope.
01 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Read the outage display as utility information
Seattle City Light says its outage map is based on estimates, may be delayed during large events and excludes underground network distribution areas in downtown Seattle, First Hill and the University District. A missing map entry therefore does not prove that a stopped machine is faulty or that your address has power. Its restoration estimates can also change as crews learn more.
Save the displayed observation time if it helps explain the interruption. Separately record the time someone safely noticed a machine stop and whether the whole unit appeared affected. If no one observed the equipment overnight, record that interval as unknown rather than turning a utility estimate into machine runtime.
02 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Keep electrical clearance ahead of equipment handling
Do not handle wet electrical equipment or enter water to reach a plug. Report hazardous electrical conditions to appropriate emergency or qualified electrical help. The restoration business should explain which specialist decisions must be resolved before its equipment is operated; this guide gives no breaker-reset, wiring or generator instructions.
Ask the provider to identify each affected machine, who may restart it, and what inspection or operating instructions apply. A hypothetical hallway light coming back on says nothing about a dehumidifier beside wet flooring. A qualified assessment, not a map icon, must resolve the relevant safety question.

Agree on the updated drying visit and charges
For structural drying, ask how the interruption changes the next assessment, equipment operation and documentation. Request a dated note recording known downtime, unknown intervals and the next material checks. Do not describe the room as dry because electricity is back.
Ask whether the interruption changes equipment rental, labor or a planned completion visit and who approves those changes. Keep the original record so both parties can see what was known before the outage. Ask the answering provider to identify itself and confirm availability, assessment charges and the written scope at your address. This site is an independent referral publisher, not City Light, an electrician or a certification of safe restart.
YOUR DECISION WORKSHEET
Power restoration and drying restart are different checkpoints
| Checkpoint | What to record | Who resolves it |
|---|---|---|
| Utility information | Display time and stated estimate | Serving utility |
| Equipment safety | Affected machines and unresolved hazards | Qualified responder and provider |
| Drying reassessment | Known interruption and next material checks | Restoration business and authorizer |

CALL-PREPARATION TOOL
Know what to say when you call.
Build a short outline from what you know. This does not submit a request or book service.
Your call notes
Questions to ask: Do not enter water or handle wet electrical equipment. Distinguish observation time from estimated outage duration. Ask who can clear and restart each machine. Please confirm whether you handle the water removal and drying needs I describe and serve my address, plus any assessment fees and exclusions.
Common questions
Does no outage on the map mean I should reset equipment?
No. The map has limits and cannot assess your equipment or electrical conditions. Ask the provider for safe next steps.
Does returned power establish drying completion?
No. Material condition and the drying plan require their own assessment and record.
